46 Mommas Shave for the Brave
“Your child has cancer.” Every weekday, 46 families in the United States hear these words.
This September, during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, 46 Mommas will gather in Washington, D.C., to shave their heads in support of childhood cancer awareness. Jennifer Inman-Cartwright is one of those moms.
Each year, a new class of 46 Mommas is inducted into the cause to empower and engage mothers of children with cancer. By increasing awareness of childhood cancer and by raising funds for childhood cancer research by shaving their heads, they hope to one day become a group that no longer needs to exist.
So far, the Class of 2011 has already raised more than $256,900 to support the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and their mission to fund the very best in childhood cancer research.
According to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a child is diagnosed with cancer every three-and-a-half minutes, and every 4 hours a child loses their battle with cancer. About one in 300 boys and one in 333 girls will develop cancer before age 20. Currently, childhood cancer research funding accounts for less than 3 percent of all cancer research funding allotted by the federal government.
